Our annual Grade Seven Bison Hunt is now history. Thirty-one students to-
gether with teachers and other school staff, parents, and community mem-
bers spent five days and nights at the North end of Aishihik Lake, on the
traditional territory of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nation. The
weather was good (minus 28 the first night, a big wind storm the second)
with generally mild weather. Several bison were spotted over the three
hunting days and one cow was harvested. The meat is now hanging and a
butchering date will be set soon.
A major undertaking of this sort requires a huge effort from a lot of indi-
viduals. Here is a list of the adult participants who were at the camp. Our
thanks go to all of them as well as to our Grade Seven students, who worked
hard and behaved well throughout.

We’d also like to thank the Champagne and Aishihik First Nation for allow-
ing us to hunt on their land; Kwanlin Dun First Nation (Community Health)
for providing all of our suppers, Elijah Smith School Council for providing
all of our breakfasts, the Yukon Department of Education for all of their
general and logistical support, Great Northern Oil for their fuel dona-
tions, to Super Save Propane for their fuel donation, and the many ESES
parents who helped out in a host of different ways, from cooking to packing
to putting away the gear after the hunt!
