In September 2007, Jack Hulland School embarked on an educational journey to help children navigate through the ethical challenges and pressures they will face throughout life. The fundamental questions asked are:

How do we develop good character in our children?

What are the basic traits that build and promote responsible citizenship in children?

Moral Intelligence is the capacity to understand right from wrong, to have strong ethical convictions and behave in the right and honourable way.

The good news is that moral intelligence can be learned from an early age.
Jack Hulland School believes that there are seven core virtues that help children to do the right thing.  Michele Borba, Ed. D., (author of Parents Do Make a Difference) defines these virtues in her book Building Moral Intelligence.  As part of our Moral Intelligence Education, Jack Hulland will be promoting the learning and understanding  of these virtues over the next few years. Having good moral intelligence can affect every aspect of a person’s life as well as the quality of all relationships both personal and professional. Character Education may be your child’s greatest legacy.

The Seven Virtues as defined in Michele Borba’s book Building Moral Intelligence are:
  1.  Empathy - “Identifying with and feeling other people’s concerns”
  2. Conscience - “Knowing the right and decent way to act and acting that way.”
  3.  Self Control - “Regulating your thoughts and actions so that you stop any pressures from within and act the way you know and feel is right”
  4. Respect – “Showing you value others by treating them in a courteous and considerate way”
  5.  Kindness - “Demonstrating concern about the welfare and feelings of others”
  6. Tolerance - “Respecting the dignity of rights of all persons, even those whose beliefs and behaviors differ from our own”
  7. Fairness - “Choosing to be open minded and to act in a just and fair way”
