To me, Jack Hulland is more than a school – it’s an idea. During my time as a grade seven teacher here I often marveled at the wonderful young people who I received each year from grade six. It took a few years for me to begin to understand that these kids had undergone a transformation – they had participated in an educational process that I came to call “The Jack Hulland Way” of doing things. The success I was having with grade seven students was built on a foundation of excellence from kindergarten through grade six. Our staff and school community have evolved over a period of 40 or more years into a unique team that puts kids first. As you may have discerned, I’m very proud of us all!
Sometimes people of my generation find technology a bit confusing and intimidating. When I was in school a website was a home for spiders, google was a noise your boots made when you pulled them out of particularly deep mud, and a blackberry was – well, just that, a blackberry! This site is a celebration of our progress and evolution as learners in a culture of life long learning. We are doing things our parents would have scoffed at as mere science fiction. Our students amaze us with their intelligence and ingenuity with things technological and at the same time challenge us to “lead, follow, or get out of the way!” just as we pushed the boundaries with our folks. At Jack Hulland we embrace these changes while holding on to our unique cultural values as Yukoners – a spirit of independence and a love of the outdoors. I believe we are proof-positive that it is possible to hold on to that which is good about the past while at the same time helping to shape the future.
I’m happy to welcome you to our school website, whether you are logging in from down the street or checking us out from Alpha Centuri.
