THE PERSECUTION OF THE JEWISH PEOPLE IN THE MIDDLE AGES

Persecution Of The Jewish People

In the Middle Ages Christianity was the foundational religion of Europe. The Jewish people were viewed differently by Christian people and they were treated as the Christians worst enemies. The Christians were afraid that the Jews would spread their teachings. If the Jewish people would spread their teachings the Christian religion would lose supporters. The Jewish people were some of the most skilful tradesmen in all of Europe, but because of their religion not all jobs were open to them. Many of them specialised in medicine but were not allowed to treat Christian people. The Jewish people could not get the the jobs that Christian did, therefore they made a lot less money. The Jewish people were forced to wear yellow patches on their clothing for identification.

Why They Were Killed

The Jewish people were blamed for nearly everything that was going wrong in the community. The Christians blamed the Jewish people for the crucifixion of Jesus, accused them of performing Anti-Christian rituals and killing Christian children in those rituals. The Jewish people were often the scapegoats (a person wrongfully accused) of the community and blamed by the Christians for problems for which they had no control. They were once blamed for poisoning the villages water and were then persecuted. One of the main reasons Jewish people were killed was because of their beliefs. The Christians believed in one religion that was prevalent during that time in Europe. They were seen as outsides and they didnšt belong.

This picture portrays that the Jews were in league with Satan

How They Were Persecuted

The Jewish people were forced to live in ghettos. They were killed many different ways. The Christians were constantly making excuses to attack them. The Christians thought of them as being lower class people and treated the Jewish people like they were filth. As mentioned before, the Jews were accused of poisoning the towns water. Despite the objections of the city officials the mob of Christians forced the entire Jewish community to the Jewish cemetery were the Jews were burned to death by the Christians in a bonfire. Many young children were pulled out of the fire and were baptised Christians against their mother and fathers will. The Jewish people were killed by the Christians in the Middle Ages. Many were killed during the Crusades , sometimes entire Jewish communities were killed. Even after the Middle Ages Jewish people were still being persecuted and murdered.
