DOUG HARRIS, Whitehorse, Yukon
Yukon Quest musher and Whitehorse resident, Doug Harris , has generously agreed to be featured this year as our Quest musher for the Yukon Quest Student Homepage Project.
Doug was raised in Saskatchewan and joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in August 1973. He has lived in the Northwest Territories and moved to Yukon in June, 1981.
In 1986 Doug and Claire moved to an acreage on the Carcross Road. Before the end of his first winter at their new location, Doug began running a small team of six dogs. The Southern Lakes Classic was the first dogsled race Doug entered and he found the experience so encouraging and enjoyable that he continued to enter races over the next few years.
This will be the second time that Doug has entered the Yukon Quest Dogsled Race. As a Quest rookie, he placed an impressive sixth place in his first running of the Yukon Quest in 1996. That year he also was the recipient of the Quest's "Challenge of the North" award. This is given to the musher who most exemplifies the "spirit of the Yukon Quest", a spirit that compels one to challenge the country and win.
This grueling race will take Doug over 1600 km of trail , in bitter cold temperatures and through some of the most secluded countryside in the world.

We all wish Doug and Claire the best of luck in this year's running of the Yukon Quest!!
