Hidden Valley Elementary School

Hello Letter

Thank you for participating in the wolf web program. In the Yukon it can get can to -50°c in the winter. This winter it only got to -45°C. The winter is all most dark, we only have about 6 hours of daylight right now.

At night it is very nice because we have major Northern lights/Aurora Borealis. In the summertime it gets quite hot. The temperature in the summer can go as high as +35°C. Last year was the driest summer in the Yukon's history! Our day light is pretty long , lasting 24 hours in the summer.

Since its very clean in the Yukon, we can drink most of the water in streams and some rivers without polluting it. We have many wild animals such as moose, caribou, deer, lynx, cougars, grizzly bears, black bears, ravens and other smaller birds and animals. All of these animals can survive the winter. All the electricity is powered by dam on the Yukon river. Our city was named Whitehorse because of the rapids on the Yukon river that looked like horses dancing through the waves. The population of Whitehorse is about 26,000. In Whitehorse we have 14 schools, that's a lot for a population of 26,000 people. The population of the Yukon is around 35,000.

Hidden Valley School was built in 1992. It has a main floor that has all the classrooms on it. The upstairs storage room holds the pottery kiln. We now have 155 students and 15 teachers in this school. It quite a small school. By the main entrance we have a snack shop that serves yummy beverages and other snacks. It is run by the grade 7 classes. Sadly though we cannot serve chocolate bars and pop because some children in the primary have deadly allergies to peanut butter. It is open every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays. Attached to the side of the school is our computer lab. Our school starts at kindergarten and goes all the way up to grade 7.It used to go to grade 6 but they changed it. Every class has gym every day. Our gym is pretty small but it is very tall. Our soccer field is very green and is surrounded by tall pine trees.

Our librarian and her family donated their turtle that now lives in the front foyer close to the gym. Everyone thought she was a male but she wasn't, so they changed her name from Brutis to Brutesa. The grade 7 students get options. They can choose Hunter Safety, Pottery and Sewing and Media Studies. We change each term. Our principal's name is Mrs. Broder. The grade 7 students also have "School Money" to teach us about life when we are older. We get paid $500 a week/$100 a day. We pay $100 in taxes per week. Full time job= $50/week. Part time job= $20/week. We can get $5 fines if we don't do certain things. We can get $5 bonuses if we work hard. The 'school money' we save we can spend at auctions. For the past few years we have won gold in the inter school soccer championships. We play volleyball, basketball and soccer in tournaments. We don't have a football team but we do have a wrestling team. What kind of sports do you play? We have fund raisers like snack shops and bake sales. Recently we had a bake sale regarding the victims of hurricane Mitch in Central America. We sent over 380 dollars down (that's pretty good for a small school). Does your school have any fund raisers? Does your school have any special courses or programs (besides the Wolf Web)? Thank you for joining the Wolf Web. Don't forget to write back!

Hidden Valley's Questions and The Team's Answers

1. How many wolves are in your state?

YT There are about 4,000 wolves in our territory, they are commonly known as the Grey or Timber wolf (Canis Lupus).

TX Wolves no longer live in wild in Texas. We were unable to get the exact amount of wolves found in the zoos across the state.

2. Have there ever been human attempts to control the wolf population?

YT There have been 2 programs to protect the Caribou, the program was called the Caribou Protection Program, the people were trying to protect the Porcupine and the Finlayson herds. The reason they killed off the wolves, because the program felt that the wolves were killing off too many young caribou as the herd was moving. The way the programs killed the wolves was by shooting them from a helicopter. It went on for 5 years and is not happening any more.

TX One reason wolves no longer live in Texas is because many were shot and killed by ranchers and farmers in the past.

3. Are there any First Nations or other groups that have cultural beliefs about wolves in your area?

YT Yes there are First Nations that have beliefs about Wolves! The First Nations have different clans like the Wolf clan and the Crow clan. The Tlingit Natives have many stories and beliefs about relationships between man and wolf. The Vuntut Gwitchin's have there beliefs based on trust. To many of the cultures the wolf is a symbol of past human mistakes because they have been exterminated from a large area of humans.

TX We could not locate any information regarding cultural beliefs about wolves that our Texas Native Americans may have had in the past or still have today.

4. What kind of sub species, i.e. Red Wolf, Eastern Timber Wolf, can be located in your state? What are their sizes and how are they adapted to your climate?

YT We have only one type of wolf in our area, the Northern timber wolf also commonly referred to as the Grey wolf. The males are 40-45 kilograms while the females are 35-40 kilograms. The colour of adult Yukon wolf can vary from tan to jet black, and rarely, white. Wolves get lighter coloured fur as they get older.

TX In the past the Red Wolf and the Mexican Grey Wolf both lived in Texas. An adult Red wolf averages between 45-70 pounds. Its shorter fur helped it to survive hot summers here in Texas. The Mexican grey wolf weighs from about 70-90 pounds and is about 4 to 5 feet long. The Mexican Grey wolf lived in the grasslands and hilly regions of Texas.

5. Do you have zoos or other venues where you can observe wolves?

YT Whitehorse is so small and has so much other wildlife that we don't really need zoos or other venues here we can go out with our family and go for walks and see all kinds of wildlife but you usually don't see wolves.

TX Yes, we have quite a few zoos where we can observe wolves. There are zoos in Houston, Fort Worth, El Paso, and Victoria. There is a Wildlife Center around Dallas, as well. Our closest zoo is Houston Zoo. Most of the students in our class have visited this zoo, since it is only 30 miles away. There are 4 female Mexican Grey Wolves at the Houston Zoo and 3 of those wolves will be part of a breeding program. Hopefully, their grandchildren will be released back into the wild.
