Habitat

Black bears live in a den that can also be a hole under a tree. They can be found in North America, Alaska, and Mexico. They hibernate all winter long. They stay in their  den for seven months. They also live in high mountains and big forests.

Appearance

Black bears have furry ears. They are very good smellers. They also hear very well. They have poor eye sight. They have 42 teeth and sharp teeth for eating meat. They sheds their coat which is black. It could also be cinnamon or blonde. The adult weighs about 100 kg. A female weighs about 75 kg. They have thick muscles.

Offspring

Black bars have one to three babies in the winter. The little baby black bears are called cubs. When the black bear is born it is very tiny. The baby is about 25 cm long when it’s born. They weigh about one kg when they are born, which is the same as one apple. They are helpless when they are born and they have no fur. They follow mother all around. The babies stay with their mother for about one year.

Diet

Black bears eat all kinds of berries. They eat blueberries and wild strawberries. It also eat lots of kinds of honey. They use their snout to find good food. This bear also eats meat and green plants. They eat red ants and black ants. Black bears will eat tree buds if they must. They even eat grasshoppers and they eat wasps.

Predators

The black bears climb trees to get away. It can smell their enemies. People are bad enemies. Other black bears are enemies too. The cougar is a predator and also tape worms and ticks.

Other Facts

Did you know that not all black bears are black? They also scratch bark off trees. If they eat garbage, it can cause their teeth to rot.
