In 1976 a race from Fairbanks to Whitehorse was
in the heads of four men, Roger Williams, Leroy Shank, Ron Rosser
and Willie Libb. They decided on the name Yukon Quest to honor the
Yukon River, the water high way of the Yukon. The trail they planned
would follow the path that the prospectors went to reach inland
Alaska from the Klondike in the 1898 gold rush. The race would test
both talent & logistic of the musher who entered. In 1984 26
teams left Fairbanks and in 16 days 20 teams arrived in Whitehorse.
Sonny Lindner became the first Yukon Quest winner and won it in
12 days.
Over the years the Yukon Quest has suffered many
set backs, most financial. But each year the Yukon Quest has pulled
through and will hopefully continue running the world’s toughest
dog sled race.
