Step-by-Step Tutorial

Pearl-Hodgins for the Human Rights Project

about Human Rights issues. Choose a theme within Human Rights that you would
like explore. This should be matched to the song that you have analyzed in
class and chosen to use to build your Human Rights iMovie. The Human Rights
themes are as follows:

Getting set up
- 1. Go to the CPH folder
(ok
ok) on the server and create a new folder with your names
& iMovie on it such as
Fred_Ted_iMovie_folder. This is where you
should save all files to be used on this project.

- 2. Go to the Human
Rights Photos page and
select the pictures you want to use for your presentation. Make sure you click
on the thumbnail picture to see the largest view. Download them to your folder
that you created in CPH. Please do not renamed them, leave them as 055.jpg
for now.

- 3. Use the Human Rights &
iMovie
Project Storyboard and complete
4 scenes before you begin creating your iMovie. You are expected to
do a draft of your work before using iMovie. Each time we work together you
must have at least 4 scenes ready on paper (your storyboard).

- 4. Launch iMovie2 and
click New Project on the opening screen or choose New
Project from the File menu.

- 5. Type a name for your project
such as Fred_Ted_iMovie and save to the folder
you created in CPH. Click Create. iMovie creates a folder
for the new project and the iMovie workspace appears.

- 6. To add the Photos you wish to use go to
File menu....Import File and find your folder of images that
you downloaded from our Human
Rights Photos page on the server.
You should see your photos on the iMovie shelf.

- 7. Continue until all clips are
imported.
- 8. Under File menu
select Save Project.

Clips
- 1. Once the clips are on the
shelf, you can view and rename them. Use the mode switch to select
Edit mode.

- 2. Select a clip on the shelf
that you want to watch, then use the Edit Mode playback
controls to view it.

- 3. Click on the default name
(Clip 01) for each clip in the Clip Shelf and rename the
clip.

- 4. Click the eye icon to select
the clip viewer, if it is not already selected. Drag clips from
the shelf to the clip viewer in the order you want them. To
move more than one clip at a time, hold down the Shift key
and select clips. A selected clip is yellow.
- 5. To play clips in the order they appear
in the clip viewer, make sure the playhead is at the left end of the scrubber
bar, then click the Play Button.

- 6. To change the order of the clips in the
Timeline, click on a clip and drag it to a new location.

- 7. You can change the amount of time the
image appears on the screen, by selecting the image and then typing a duration
value in the time area of the clip viewer.

Adding Transitions


- 1. Transitions link the last frame of one
clip to the first frame of the next clip.

- 2. Click on Transitions in the shelf.
-
- 3. Drag the playhead to the end of a clip
to create a transition from that clip to the next.

- 4. Select a transition from the list and
view the preview in the upper right corner.

- 5. Repeat this process to add transitions
between each clip.

Adding Titles

- 1. Click the desired clip and then click
on the Titles button in the Shelf.

- 2. Select a title style and type the text
for your title into the text fields. Once you have completed your title, drag
the title from the titles list to where you want it in the clip viewer. If
it is to appear over a clip, drag it to before that clip. If you want it at
the beginning or end of the project, drag it before or after the clips.

- 3. For some title styles (Centered Multiple)
you can add more text fields.

- 4. Adjust the speed of the titling effect
using the Speed or Pause sliders.

- 5. To put the title over a black box select
OverBlack. The title appears over the clip if the box is unchecked.

- 6. Click on the Color box to select
a color.

- 7. Select a font and size.

- 8. If your title scrolls you can change the
direction by clicking on the direction button.

- 9. Click and drag the title to the Timeline.
Place it before the clip that you want titled.

- 10. The title will automatically start rendering.
A black line is displayed that fills in with red as rendering continues. Allow
your computer time to finish this process before moving on. Be patient.

Recording CD Music

- 1. Click on the Audio button.

- 2. Insert the audio CD.
- Importing an AIFF or MP3 Audio File:
- 1. In the Timeline viewer, position
the playhead at the desired location.

- 2. Drag from File menu to Import
File.

- 3. Locate the file and click import.

Exporting Your Movie

- 1. Go to File, then (Export Movie
or apple+e). Save as a Quicktime Movie.
