Teacher
Created iMovie: When
I Become a Teacher
The way
we teach & learn is shifting and the whole
philosophy of educating kids, is moving away from the
70% lecture environment to 80% self-directed
guidance. iMovie is a great tool to allow us as teachers to see
immediately how easy it is to shift from the "sage on
the stage" to "guide on the side." The teacher is more
of a resource person than the information provider.
The kids are doing and creating meaning for themselves
and they are much more likely to take risks than
adults.
iMovie
is an application
that
empowers
children!

| Keep
It Burning (song
by Billy Joel):
This is an iMovie with a long list of
"things" our students have never known. They have
never owned a record player. They of course use a VCR,
but have no idea what BETA is. In terms of teachers,
it is not unusual for the staff at a single school to
have graduated from high school in the 50's, 60's,
70's 80's and 90's. The facts we could list from our
own teen years and the differences each decade has
seen is amazing!

Digital
Kids Who They are and How They
Learn: Adapted
from Apple's website
|
|
Today's
kids are different than kids were 15 years ago.
They learn differently and as a result can feel
disconnected from schools that were designed for
another time. |
They
use many means to stay in constant touch with
their peers and to access information about
their world. They commonly use land phones,
cell phones, handheld devices (PDAs), email,
the Internet, and fax
machines.
Digital
kids are multitaskers. |
|
These
digital kids take in and respond to rapidly
transmitted sights and sounds whether on
television, computers, or video
games.
Digital
kids are hypercommunicators. |
They
see no problem watching TV, browsing the
Internet, listening to music, and
communicating with their friends at the same
time. Digital
kids are goal oriented. When multitasking,
they may pursue multiple goals at the same
time.
Digital
kids are ambitious and success
oriented. |
|
|
The
Disconnect: What digital kids need to
learn
|
| We
often joke that today's kids are wired
differently. In fact, they are.
Research indicates the constant exposure to
multiple, overlapping sights and sounds has
affected the neural pathways of digital kids'
brains. Essentially their brains respond to
sensory input differently than older,
pre-1980 brains. Some researchers contend
that in order to retain information and be
able to put it to use, they must have
multisensory input.

Achievement
Redefined: Technology
Proficiency
|
|
Most
people think "technology proficiency" means
typing fast or quickly creating a PowerPoint
presentation. However, it is not about how well
the student knows the technology itself, but how
the technology helps the child to learn a
subject better, faster, or deeper. This leads to
higher student achievement. |

The iMovie application can be used
at any
grade level. |

Excellent
for those that need instructions visually
& auditorally. Each step is presented as
a small movie.
2.
Any good multimedia presentation requires
planning & organization. It is always a
good idea to plan on paper for your iMovie
first (or learn the hard way when you lose
your work). Please see an example of a video
storyboard
and one to print
out. |
