Learning Outcomes
Students will:
  • use the Internet to study an animal they would like to have as a pet.
  • locate and read books about the pet that is selected.
  • learn how to take care of their pet and record inmformation about that pet as well as draw a picture using AppleWorks 6 on their trading card.
  • identify animals that people rely on for food, clothing, companionship, transportation, etc.
  • distinguish between wild or domestic animals.
  • compare characteristics of animals that are good pets and contrast characteristics of different pets.
  • describe the appearance and behaviour of a variety of animals
  • determine the requirements of healthy animals
  • identify similarities and differences among animal species
  • compare and contrast different types of animal life cycles
  • describe structures that enable animals to survive in different environments
  • demonstrate a knowledge of what animals need to survive
  • explain how animals interact with one another
  • talk about personal experiences of pets.
  • listen and respond to others - whole class, small groups, visiting speakers.
  • discuss and define the roles played by owners and people in the wider community who help look after pets.
  • ask questions and listen to the ideas of others.
  • present information using appropriate technology for example Appleworks 6 drawing and word processing.
  • justify reasons for or against having a pet.
  • respond to language and meanings in texts drawing on personal background and experiences.
  • explain the importance of safety when working and playing with small animals
  • decide what is meant by responsible pet ownership
  • discuss the benefits and drawbacks to pet ownership for all individuals
  • understand the specific needs of pets and the ways in which those needs can be met.
  • understand the consequences of pet owner irresponsibility.
