Introduction
In the Spring of 1989, Alex Jackson joins his father, a cameraman with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, on assignment in China. Alex, a young 17 year old, is a Chinese history buff. He is very excited to have the opportunity to visit China.
 
As the media prepares to cover the historic visit of Russian premier, Gorbachev, events in Beijing begin to heat up. Students and civilians demonstrate for democracy in Tian An Men Square. Quickly the protest becomes violent and what Alex sees will change his life forever.
 
The events of Tian An Men Square are devastating. This historic event is an amazing human rights violation, as many are imprisoned and killed. Read Forbidden City by William Bell and complete this Webquest in order to learn more about this human rights event...
The Task
While reading Forbidden City you will learn more about the historical event of 1989 in Tian An Men Square. In order for you to truly understand these events and to share with others your human rights knowledge, you will need to complete the activities in this Webquest.
 
Once you have completed the novel and the other activities, you will write a newspaper article from Alex Jackson's point of view. You will use AppleWorks 6 to create this article and include pictures of this dreadful event.

Timeline Activity
Tian An Men Square has played an important part in the history of China. Many events have taken place in Tian An Men Square that were significant in the 1989 demonstrations. Using the following sites and Inspiration to create a timeline for the following events in Chinese History. Your timeline should tell the year of the event, what happened during the event AND how it relates to the democracy movement of 1989. View an example timeline and instructions.

Writing activity
You have learned a lot of important information regarding the Spring 1989 tragedy in China. Now put yourself in Alex Jackson's shoes. You have just returned to Canada and you need to communicate this story to the rest of the world.
• Write a detailed newspaper article that depicts the events of the Tian An Men Square massacre.
• Include a minimum of 4 photos with a brief explanation of each photo.
• Your newspaper must have a name, an issue and a date.
• The article must have a title and your name (Alex Jackson) must appear on the article.
• Be creative!
• Don't forget that a good article contains the answers to the following questions : who? what? when? where? why?

As you conclude this novel study think about the following questions...
Could the June 1989 massacre in Tian An Men Square been avoided?
Has Canada experienced student protest situations similar to that of Beijing?
Are "Human Rights" issues limited to developing nations?
Please reflect on these questions and write a minimum one page essay stating your opinions.
