Conduct
a mini-science fair for the holidays, putting a different
flavor on celebrations. Here is one idea to explore:
investigating just how Christmas lights work, including
those blinker bulbs. Have one group of students take
on this research project with a class presentation
and/or demonstration in mind as their final product
for assessment.
An
investigation into the uses of symbols across the
centuries and across human cultures culminates in
a close-up look at winter symbols in particular. Examples
cover many multi-cultural winter celebrations including
Chanukah, Christmas, winter solstice, Baboushka, Svaty
Miklaus, the Three Kings, Saint Nicholas, and Befana.
Students will also rediscover symbols in their own
lives, and then create a meaningful one of their own.
Christmas
buttons, Chanukah banners, Christmas icons and graphics,
winter snow globes, New Year's greetings...these and
many more holiday graphics are collected and presented
on this site.
For
those classes who will be counting down the days in
December, find a printable advent calendar here to
color, assemble, and practice numbers and counting
for younger grades.
