Teacher Resources
How Christmas Lights Work
Conduct a mini-science fair for the holidays, putting a different flavor on celebrations. Here is one idea to explore: investigating just how Christmas lights work, including those blinker bulbs. Have one group of students take on this research project with a class presentation and/or demonstration in mind as their final product for assessment.
Celebrating Winter Symbols and their Traditions
An investigation into the uses of symbols across the centuries and across human cultures culminates in a close-up look at winter symbols in particular. Examples cover many multi-cultural winter celebrationsincluding Chanukah, Christmas, winter solstice, Baboushka, Svaty Miklaus, the Three Kings, Saint Nicholas, and Befana. Students will also rediscover symbols in their own lives, and then create a meaningful one of their own.
The History of the Christmas tree
The traditions of many cultures come together in the decorating of a special tree during the holidays. This lesson plan introduces the uses of evergreen trees, logs, and the special place of lights from ancient times up to modern practices.
