Overview
- The objective
of this unit is to understand changes that have occurred in First Nations culture. At the end of the unit, students will be able
to answer the following questions:
-
- 1. Has this
particular group changed since contact with Europeans? How? Why?
- 2. What are
the similarities and differences between the groups that you have
studied?
-
- This will
be achieved by studying several First Nations & Inuit cultures both in
the past and in the present. Students will conduct in class and
online research. They will be collecting information on several
topics pertaining to individual groups including food, shelter,
language, clothing, artwork, spirituality, and games.
-
- Five cultural
groups (Mi'kmaq, Huron, Plains Cree, Haida & Inuit) have been
preselected to represent both the geographical and cultural diversity
of First Nations that find themselves in present day Canada. They
have also been selected because of their are adequate and appropriate
resources available for these groups.
-
- Students will
work with a partner choose a graphic organizer with which to organize
and present their information including a venn diagram & semantic
mapping. In addition, groups will create a PowerPoint presentation
representing their First Nations people as a comparison with
others as well as pre & post contact differences.
